Continuous Line : Natalia Vodianova

Didn’t quite end up looking like her…but I like the twisty lines at the bottom.

Happy New Year!

It is a time of year again when resolutions and goals are flying left and right. You need a target in order to improve, to grow, to hit that bullseye.

I want to expand my drawing abilities, and I challenge you to do the same. It doesn’t matter what level you are or think you are at, just pick up a pencil, do your best, and have fun with it!

The most important thing is to do it. Every day. It can take 2 minutes, it can take 20. Whatever you have to give will make a difference. You will look back in a few months and perhaps surprise yourself with what you will have created and learned, piece by piece!

My theme for this month: continuous line drawing.
This means using a single line to create an image. The line can long, curvy, straight, wiggly, jagged or smooth - maybe all of the above, as you see fit! The point is to identify the key elements in an object or form, and capture those with as little description as possible. Let’s get down to basics.

I’m expect

ing this to be a little awkward at first. But I look forward to the experimentation!

Here’s my first attempt, based on a striking photo of Japanese model Rinko Kikuchi. As you can see her face is a bit misshapen, and her hair could have been expressed with more pizazz…something I need to work on for next time.

Your turn! :)
